I attended this conference today. This conference was held at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. I met scores of highly dedicated individuals, who work tirelessly promoting awareness of this debilitating and cruel illness.
What I found most disturbing is what I didn't see. This is the second Alzheimer's event in two weeks (see Alzheimer's Walk Post) that was glaringly ignored by any elected officials. Even minor candidates like John Spencer and Christopher Callahan did not feel that this cause is important enough to show up. Yeah, I didn't really know who these losers were until a few days ago.
By the way what would a Mayoral Conference be without the Mayor? Exactly what it was. Hizzoner, Mayor Mike, didn't feel it was worth five minutes of his time to say, that stamping out this horror of a disease and all the associated abuse is a good thing.
Next year I will embarrass them into showing up! Meanwhile God bless all the amazing soldiers in this war against hopelessness and despair, and shame on those who choose to remain on the sidelines.
