Susan Van Blarcom-Young

My Dad entered a dementia-care unit of an assisted living facility October 2008. After just 2 days, the staff there said he needed to go to a geri-psych hospital to have his meds "adjusted". We were opposed, but they insisted he couldn't stay if we didn't send him. Within days he was put on Celexa, Geodon & Depokote. Prior to coming there, he could walk and talk well. In no time, he was unable to even lift his head or open his eyes. Needless to say, we insisted these be discontinued. But this hasn't stopped. If he acts up, they want him on these drugs, and they've tried several which cause him to be even MORE angry and agitated. When we question ANYTHING, we are told we are making trouble, and he ends up getting kicked out of the nursing homes, and we feel he has been black-balled in the nursing home community. His Psych Dr. has been very nasty to my mother. What resources can we take against this? Anyone know?

My dad is being drugged right now. My brother is going to his case meeting at the nursing home tomorrow and is going to demand to see just how much and how often he has been given haldol. He told them last night that he wanted him off all medications.

I feel sorry for all that. We must not sed our parents to nursing homes.

Mary

Thanks for this helpful information. I believe a relative in a nursing home has received the drugs you speak of.
